Prepare executive project updates that make the current position, changing exposure, and required decisions easy to understand.
When delivery dates move, cost forecasts increase, or recovery depends on overdue approvals, your update needs to explain what changed, which commitment is affected, what outcome is now expected, and what management needs to do.
Executive Project Updates: From Data to Decision develops that skill through 14 focused lectures across four sections. You will follow the Meridian Distribution Hub Expansion, a continuous project case involving equipment delays, declining productivity, technical approvals, cost exposure, and reduced schedule protection.
You will practice how to:
Select the information that matters to executives and filter out operational detail.
Describe material changes using clear reference points and accurate comparisons.
Connect project facts to consequences for schedule, cost, and operational readiness.
Distinguish variance, trend, and forecast, and test the assumptions behind recovery.
Write a one-sentence project status and justify red, amber, or green ratings with evidence.
Communicate bad news through fact, consequence, response, and remaining exposure.
Request a specific decision with an owner, deadline, options, recommendation, and impact of delay.
Build a one-page executive update, deliver a clear 60-second opening, and organize a 10-minute briefing.
The course includes 14 practical downloadable resources. These include editable Word templates, Excel workbooks, an executive update checklist, the Meridian case pack, and a completed instructor version.
Use the tools to filter executive signals, record material changes, review forecast assumptions, assess project status, prepare escalations, and develop decision requests. The briefing planner and action log help you finish the meeting with clear decisions, accountable owners, and deadlines.
In the final challenge, you will work from raw project information to produce your own one-page update, decision request, opening statement, briefing plan, and follow-up record. You can then compare your work with the instructor version and use the assessment criteria to improve it.
This course is designed for project managers, delivery and program managers, PMO and project controls professionals, consultants, and client representatives who communicate with sponsors, senior management, or steering committees.
Use the reusable templates on your own projects to prepare clear, evidence-based updates that support timely management action.
