Payment Infrastructure in Modern Banking

Course Details
Modern Banking Systems: Payment Infrastructure Fundamentals is a beginner-friendly course designed to explain how money moves through the modern banking system.
Most customers only see the simple front-end experience: a card tap, a direct deposit, a wire transfer, an ATM withdrawal, or a payment that appears as pending in a banking app. But behind every transaction, there are banks, payment processors, card networks, clearing systems, settlement systems, ATM networks, and financial institutions working together.
In this course, students will learn the foundation of modern banking and payment infrastructure in a clear and practical way. The course begins with an introduction to modern banking systems and explains why payment infrastructure is essential to everyday financial activity. Students will then explore the structure of the banking system, including commercial banks, central banks, correspondent banking, interbank lending, reserves, and liquidity.
The course also explains bank balance sheets, including assets, liabilities, deposits, loans, and how lending can create money in the banking system. From there, students will study major payment systems such as ACH, direct deposits, wire transfers, and SWIFT. The course also covers card networks, debit and credit card processing, authorization, clearing, settlement, pending transactions, mobile wallet payments, ATM networks, and the complete lifecycle of a payment.
This course is designed for beginners, students, career changers, and future banking professionals who want to understand what happens behind the scenes in modern banking. No prior banking or technical experience is required.
